What I do

I work with the owners of the firm on business strategy and then implement that strategy as directed by the Board. I am also responsible for the operational management function, and am very well supported by a talented management team!

What I like about my work

I enjoy the challenge of working for a firm that’s growing rapidly. We never sit still and keep looking for ways to get better and better. I like working with a lot of smart people who are trying to do some fantastic things for their clients and for the firm.

I’m driven by getting the best return on investment for the business owners.

What I’ve done in the past

I did my degree part time while working for a Chartered Accounting firm and wouldn’t recommend it – it’s a hard way to study! I spent eight years in total in Chartered Accountancy working for Gilks Lowe, then Peat Marwick (KPMG) (now Taylor McLachlan).

I then headed into the corporate world taking the position of Financial Controller with NZ Salmon Co Ltd. I moved to Arthur Barnett Ltd as Financial Controller before taking a corporate information (management, financial and clinical) role in the health sector in 1991. I joined Anderson Lloyd in March 1998. The firm is now almost four times the size it was when I first started.

My approach to working with people

I am discreet but also frank and straight to the point. I believe in getting things done and saying it the way it is.

What I enjoy at work

It’s the people that make Anderson Lloyd. We aim to always attract the best people we can throughout the firm. Everyone in our team is important. I think we’ve been pretty successful.

What I enjoy outside of work

As well as spending time with my family, I have two real passions – sea fishing and harness racing and breeding.

While I take every opportunity to go out to sea in my boat I also enjoy whitebaiting, the occasional game of golf, and wine.

What I enjoy about living in the South Island

I love the accessibility of everything. I can be out on my boat, on the golf-course, or whitebaiting within 10-15 minutes. And I can get up the coast to my family crib within the hour.
