What I like about my work

I really enjoy finding solutions for our clients at a price they are happy to pay. I find the law challenging in terms of working with it in the most effective and efficient way for the client's benefit. I am a team player and Anderson Lloyd is about team work and collaboration - I enjoy being part of that team.

What I’ve done in the past

I began my legal career in Auckland but quickly determined that I wasn’t a city slicker. I moved to Taranaki when I was offered a position in their NPC Rugby team. A bonus was that I could enjoy the great surf. After only intending to stay for two years at the most, I proceeded to work for, and become a partner in Reeves Middleton Young (in 1983), got married and raised a family of four children for over 20 years.

During that period I had the opportunity to undertake a wide range of work, which I know has given me a really wide base of expertise. This has been of particular benefit as I have focussed more on specialist areas.

I moved to Anderson Lloyd in Queenstown in 2005 – it was time for a new challenge. The firm had a good reputation and I was more than happy to live in the South Island and to be part of it.

My approach to working with my clients

I like to form good relationships with my clients. I recognise that, in working with me, they are entrusting me and I attempt to honour that trust by doing the best I can for them. I try to establish what they actually need, against what they might think they want, at the outset. I determine as soon as possible whether I am the right person to help them or whether they need a different skill set that is available within the firm. I look for the most efficient and effective way to achieve their desired outcome.

I am also a practising and qualified mediator which allows me to relate to and quickly identify with the clients’ issues and commence addressing them.

What I enjoy at work

Anderson Lloyd is a good, go ahead firm with a can-do attitude. There is a huge depth of expertise within the firm that I can tap into to benefit the clients I am representing.

I enjoy learning about the law and try to be a disciple of Stephen Covey's principle “to live, love, learn and leave a legacy”.

What I enjoy outside of work

I enjoy all sport, especially multi-sport, tennis and golf. I have been involved in a fair amount of sports administration and annually attend the Australia & New Zealand Sports Law Association Annual Conference to keep abreast of the current issues.

I also enjoy spending time with my family, travelling, and Central Otago Pinot Noir.

What I enjoy about living in the South Island

The space and the people who tend to be unassuming yet focused and approachable. I’ve noticed that there are no fence-sitters in Queenstown, an aspect which I really respect.
