What I like about my work

I enjoy my work because it is stimulating and challenging. No two days are ever the same and, to get the job done requires a lot of thought and creativity.

What I’ve done in the past

After completing my history degree, I worked as a Health Researcher, before going on my OE. When I returned to New Zealand, I studied law, graduating in 1990. I have worked at Anderson Lloyd since then.

My approach to working with my clients

The majority of my work is writing opinions and research, which means that I work with the vast majority of people at the firm. As a result, most of my work is referred internally. The challenge is not just to set out the law, but to apply the law to the facts and to come up with a recommendation to the client that offers a commercial and/or practical solution. Understanding the client’s position enables me to offer practical solutions.

What I enjoy at work

I enjoy pretty much everything that I do. Family protection cases and judicial reviews are particular interests of mine. I enjoy the collegiality of my work, and working as part of a team.

What I enjoy outside of work

I belong to a local book club and enjoy reading the variety of books that are on offer. My current preference is for biographies, which I find hugely interesting. I also love to listen to classical music especially the violin and the cello, and I’m encouraging my daughter to play.

I like to play tennis, but my favourite sport is rugby (watching, not playing).

I play the classical guitar and belong to my local church music group. I’m on the Board of the Marama Strings Charitable Trust, which was set up in 2003 to nurture the talents of young string players. I am involved in activities at my daughter's school, and I enjoy that very much.

What I enjoy about living in the South Island

I love the South Island scenery and living in Dunedin. It’s just the right size and the people are great.
