What I like about my work

I enjoy the variety that each day brings; every day I am faced with different challenges and all my clients have a diverse set of needs and expectations. Every job is unique and that is what makes the work both exciting and rewarding.

What I’ve done in the past

I started working at Caudwells after I graduated and was admitted to the Bar. I worked there for 3 years specialising in employment law, during which time the merger with Anderson Lloyd took place.

In 2002, I moved to the UK and worked as a corporate lawyer at the London Borough of Greenwich. The work was varied and I had responsibility for employment, contracts and procurement, education, privacy and data protection. My employer was accommodating and allowed me the opportunity to spend a considerable amount of time travelling throughout Europe, Asia and Africa.

I returned to Dunedin and Anderson Lloyd in 2005 and was made an Associate this year.

My approach to working with my clients

Most importantly, I listen to my clients so that I can understand their needs. I build relationships so that we can work together, identify the problem or issues in dispute, and then develop a strategic plan to enable the client to achieve their objectives. I also keep my clients fully informed throughout so that there are no nasty surprises. Then it is a matter of implementing the plan and delivering the best possible outcome for my client, which is invariably achieved without the need for court intervention.

What I enjoy at work

I like the fact that Anderson Lloyd is a large New Zealand firm, but still very much retains a "South Island" approach to doing business. I am also very fortunate in that our litigation team works closely together and we are able to draw on a wealth of resources and experience that we can use to our clients’ advantage.

What I enjoy outside of work

I love the outdoors and enjoy tramping, camping, hunting and fishing. I am a keen golfer and am very partial to a Central Otago Pinot or a Marlborough Savvie. Much to my surprise I have also recently developed a previously unknown interest in gardening. However, perhaps my greatest pleasure is travel, whether it be New Zealand, Australia or even a little further a field.

What I enjoy about living in the South Island

I am a South Islander through and through. We are so lucky to live in such a stunningly beautiful part of the world and we are perhaps more fortunate than most of us realise. Everything is just so accessible; whether it be the mountains, the lakes, or the Central Otago wineries. I love living in Dunedin and wouldn't want to be anywhere else.
