What I do

I'm responsible for the firm's business development and implementation of strategies to create new business.  My focus is identifying business opportunities, preparing external communications, tenders and capability statements, as well as considering sponsorship opportunities that will maintain our corporate and community profile.

What I like about my work

I enjoy the challenge – no two days are ever the same and new things crop up all the time. I have a real interest in the strategic opportunities that a business development role offers, seeing strategies and projects through from ideas to completion and enjoying the benefits they bring the firm.

What I’ve done in the past

After leaving university I embarked on a career in journalism for the Otago Daily Times. Even now I’ve got an affinity with the area and the issues. I went to the UK for two years where I worked in variety of roles including a computer project within the recruitment industry.

When I returned to New Zealand I joined Buddle Findlay and after 15 years as their services manager in Christchurch I joined Anderson Lloyd in 2005.

I wanted to work for a growing and dynamic firm and to continue working in legal practice management while remaining in the South Island. It was a great move. I am really passionate about the firm and believe in where it’s going.

My approach to working with people

Don't let anyone tell you business development in a law firm is easy.  Lawyers are intelligent, driven and heavily client focused.  The key is marshalling all that talent and energy into a focused strategic plan.  Once you've done that, look out!

What I enjoy at work

I really enjoy having such a positive involvement with a whole range of people. The environment is great – it’s really friendly and collegial.

What I enjoy outside of work

My extended family includes 7 children so I spend a LOT of time being a side-line Dad!  I enjoy taking my family to the beach, catching movies and generally spending time outdoors.

I also enjoy watching sport and am a passionate Crusaders supporter (much to the chagrin of my Dunedin colleagues!). Whenever there’s a major rugby game on, I manage the betting syndicates within the firm.

What I enjoy about living in the South Island

Living here allows me and my family to pursue our lifestyle – whether it’s going to the beach, languishing in hot pools, enjoying a winery or sightseeing. It’s also a good place for the kids to grow up.  I've lived in some pretty cold climates so nothing beats a Canterbury or a Central Otago day in the middle of summer!
