What I like about my work

I like the challenge of solving my clients' problems and the fact that my work brings me in contact with a diverse range of people. My work is interesting as it has a direct impact on the lives of my clients.

What I've done in the past

After graduating from University, I worked at a firm based in Balclutha, where I practised for 14 years and became a partner in 1994. I joined Anderson Lloyd as a partner in 2005.

My approach to working with my clients

I have an informal approach to working with my clients. I like to put them at ease and work alongside them to find solutions to their problems, or to suggest a certain strategy. It is important to me to take the time to ensure that my clients fully comprehend the implications of my advice. This is particularly the case in asset planning and protection.

What I enjoy at work

I am lucky to work with a great group of people, who are experts in their chosen area of practice. This means that, although I am a generalist practitioner, I am always able to call on specialist skills that are outside of my own practice areas, ensuring that my clients receive the very best advice.

What I enjoy outside of work

I love to spend time with my family and I am a keen spectator of my children's chosen sports. I like walking and recreational mountain biking. We have a family crib at Naseby, a tiny historic gold-mining town in Central Otago, and I spend as much time as I can there, biking, golfing and playing tennis (all badly), and generally relaxing with my family. I am also an avid reader and enjoy listening to classical and jazz music.

What I enjoy about living in the South Island

I grew up in Wellington, went to secondary school in Wanganui, and then chose to undertake study in Otago. From there I spent 14 years living and working in a small rural community before I moved to Anderson Lloyd. There is an honesty, integrity, and lack of pretension about the people of the Mainland, which I love. I appreciate the fact that people here are prepared to take the time to talk about things and that they aren't in a huge hurry. The physical environment is uncrowded and unspoilt. I can drive out of Dunedin for 20 minutes and be in unpopulated, beautiful landscape.
